Standard # 3
Educators understand and apply knowledge of student growth and development.
Educators are knowledgeable about how children develop as learners and as social beings, and demonstrate an understanding of individual learning differences and special needs. This knowledge is used to assist educators in making decisions about curriculum, instruction, assessment and classroom management.
Evidence # 1
I am reading to my two sons, Nathan and Matthew
What I have learned/competencies
As a father, I am acutely aware of how children develop as learners and social beings. Although my two boys are products of my wife and myself, they couldn't be more different in how they learn and how they understand and navigate through emotional challenges. Both my wife and myself have had to adjust our parenting and teaching styles to accommodate the needs of these two very different personalities. These experiences will help me a great deal in the classroom.
Evidence # 2
What I have learned
In my second year of the Education program, I was tasked with researching an educational theorist (Jean Jaques Rousseau) and teaching it to eight of my colleagues. Moreover, each of my eight colleagues also had a theorist for which they taught the group. This was a wonderful assignment because it provided multiple strategies for teaching to the multitude of differences in how children learn.
