Letter from Elementary Music Teacher
What I have learned
The letter from Mrs. Cheetham speaks to my understanding of the role of parents and community in education. It speaks to my ongoing commitment as a parent to help support our teachers and students in learning. As a father and someone who has volunteered to chaperone on numerous field trips for week long junior and senior high school band and choir festivals, elementary day trips and overnight middle school camps, I understand the importance of parent involvement first hand. As a teacher, I understand the importance to the families and community in involving them in the growth of our students. Moreover, and equally as important, are the benefits to the students having access to other families and community members while they are learning.
Evidence # 2
What I have learned
As a teacher I believe that the parents have a crucial role in the education of their children/our students. One of my mentor teachers this year uses email exclusively when communicating with the parents about everything from their children’s progress, to newsletters, fund raising, and band trips/concerts. In my last practicum, we also used a web space that parents could go to on a daily basis and keep informed as to the progress of the class, homework needs, upcoming
events, and other important information. I realize that technology can be used in very effective ways as long as we maintain the rules around confidentiality and information kept on Canadian
servers.
