What I have learned
I believe strongly in being part of and supporting the school community. During my first year of practicums I became involved in many different activities outside of the classroom. I volunteered to coach basketball with the principal and helped to organize our district cross-country run. I have helped out with musical productions and volunteered to coach floor hockey. Doing these extra curricular events provides an opportunity to connect with other children and teachers within the district. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to experience my students in a different sphere, rather than just the classroom.
Evidence # 2
What I have learned
As someone who is interested in teaching music, collaboration amongst music teachers is something that is not only expected, but also beneficial. For many years, I have volunteered my time as a clinician to local band teachers to help prepare their stage bands for jazz festivals.
Moreover, I continue to work with many band students who are interested in learning jazz improvisation. I have had the opportunity to attend many Professional Development Days with music colleagues. As an adult student I certainly have realized the importance of collaboration with my schoolmates in order to support each other through the difficult years of University.
My cohort was very close and supported each other in ways that I will forever be grateful.
